  • RACE & JUSTICE-FINDING FAIR AND IMPARTIAL POLICING

Hosted by Westchester-Rockland Guardians Association and Yonkers Guardians Association

As professionals in a field that is constantly subject to intense public scrutiny, we must recognize that the perceptions held of the few are, unfortunately, instantly transposed to the many. We must realize that the calls for accountability and transparency are legitimate and can only be answered through an honest assessment of our organizational goals, philosophies and culture. The convergence of police professionalization and police culture must be a recurrent theme in how we conduct our encounters with those we serve. We must continually remember that it is only through our partnerships with the communities we serve that true and equal justice for all will be obtained, recognizing that all members of the community, regardless of their human failures, attitudes and perceptions of our profession, deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

This conference is about creating the change that is needed to better support and serve the needs of our communities, regardless of their makeup; improve our relationships and bonds with those we serve; and regain the trust that has somehow been misplaced and misdirected between us as professionals and those we have sworn to protect, spreading the message that, as law enforcement officers, we are there to serve and not abuse. Conference attendance enhances your professional and personal development, provides you with tools and skills which you cannot be taught in-house or online, allows you to get feedback on your work from people who have never seen it before and may provide new insight, and helps to expand your knowledge and find new solutions to problems.

Participants will receive instruction through both lectures and panel discussions designed to be of interest to both law enforcement personnel and their community partners. Featured workshops will cover such issues as “Eliminating Microaggressions and Implicit Bias To Enhance Police-Community Engagement; An Anatomy of A Fatal Use of Force; Social Media and Law Enforcement; Weaponizing the Police-Profiling by Proxy”, and other topics designed to provide law enforcement officers with greater tools, knowledge and skills for interacting with people, particularly in communities of color. Conference attendance enhances professional and personal development, provides tools and skills which cannot be taught in-house or online, allows for feedback on your work from people who have never seen it before and may provide new insight, and helps to expand your knowledge and find new solutions to problems. Full workshop descriptions and presenter information are available at http://conference.nableo.org. All workshop sessions begin at 8:00 AM each day of the conference. A special program on Mental Health First Aid, with certification, will also be presented on Thursday and Friday of the conference.

Registration for this program is at the rate of $250.00, per person, until September 19, 2021, and is open to all members of law enforcement, community groups, businesses, organizations and institutions. Registration fees cover the costs of program materials, a continental breakfast, lunch and certificate of attendance. This program is only available to the first 100 registrants. The Mental Health First Aid Certification workshop is an additional $40.00 per person, with registrations limited to the first 32 registrants.
