As the law enforcement profession continues to evolve amidst constant and intense public scrutiny, we must recognize that the perceptions held of the few are, unfortunately, instantly transposed to the many. In our efforts to improve trust and build positive relationships with those that we serve, we must realize that the calls for accountability and transparency are legitimate and can only be answered through an honest assessment of our organizational goals, philosophies and culture. Thus, the convergence of police professionalization and police culture must be a recurrent theme in how we conduct our encounters with those we serve. We must continually remember that it is only through our partnerships with the communities we serve that true and equal justice for all will be obtained, recognizing that all members of the community, regardless of their human failures, attitudes and perceptions of our profession, deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
This three-day training conference, themed “Justice Reform: Changing the Paradigm of Community Policing”, will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Two Albany Street, New Brunswick, NJ, September 28-September 30, 2022. This training will involve the acquisition of effective communication and active listening skills, as well as other community-policing related techniques, designed to enhance and improve the relationships between community members and their law enforcement guardians.
Participants will receive instruction through both lectures and panel discussions designed to be of interest to both law enforcement personnel and their community partners. Featured workshops will cover such issues as “Fair and Impartial Policing Through Understanding Implicit Bias; After The Bang-An Anatomy of A Fatal Use of Force; Trauma Informed Policing as a Tool For Community Policing; Prevention of Police Misconduct Through Ethical Decision Making; Conflict Engagement For Law Enforcement; Civilian Oversight As A Police Accountability Mechanism”, and other topics designed to provide law enforcement officers with greater tools, knowledge and skills for interacting with people, particularly in communities of color. Conference attendance enhances professional and personal development, provides tools and skills which cannot be taught in-house or online, allows for feedback on your work from people who have never seen it before and may provide new insight, and helps to expand your knowledge and find new solutions to problems. Full workshop descriptions and presenter information are available at http://conference.nableo.org. All workshop sessions begin at 8:00 AM each day of the conference. A special program on Mental Health First Aid, with three (3) year certification, will also be presented during the conference.
